Katherine Wins 2013 ‘Best Column All Media’ from National Association of Real Estate Editors
June 10, 2013 — The National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE) awarded Katherine Salant its 2013 Gold Award (first place) for Best Column All Media at the association’s 63rd annual conference June 5-8 in Atlanta.
She also won a Silver Award (second place) in another category, Best Freelance Collection, bringing to six the number of times she’s been honored by judges in the annual real estate journalism competition.
Katherine Salant’s “Housewatch” column has appeared in The Washington Post since 1994 and been syndicated for media outlets across the U.S. She also blogs for the Post.
Her columns considered by NAREE judges this year included “Inside Looking Out: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater,” “When a Parent Ages in Place at Your Place: Planning Beyond Design” and “Looming Trend: Recycled Carpet.”
While traditionally a competition for print and broadcast media, the Best Column All Media category is now open to bloggers and others in new and social media. Eligible topics include residential, commercial or financial real estate, home design and luxury, green building or urban design.
Harvard-trained in architecture, she began her career as a Fulbright scholar, studying and living in village houses in Nepal. She has been a National Endowment for the Arts Professional Fellow and winner of the prestigious University of Missouri Lifestyle Journalism award.
A lifelong explorer of houses, she encourages consumers to think in fresh ways about home planning, design, building and remodeling, with emphasis on topics of sustainability and the effects of home design on relationships.
